Norm Macdonald

Norm Macdonald's September 14, 2021 death was a HUGE deal in the hospital and seemed quite sudden. I didn't find out about the leukemia until I read the Wiki

Fortunately for Netflix subscribers there are episodes of Norm Macdonald Has A Show

It looks something like this.
Macdonald botches the Wayne and Shuster close (the one thing, besides Ed Broadbent's speeches, that persuaded me I could speak French) six ways until Sunday. Billy Joe Shaver was a friend and guest.

In fact, it was my reminiscence of "Georgia On A Fast Train" that got me thinking of Norm Macdonald. This is a YouTube video of Billy Joe Shaver on Norm Macdonald Has A Show. It ends with a phone call to Robert Duval. I miss Norm Macdonald. Except for Frank and Gordon. I still want to skin those rodents

Have had it in mind to go dig up Jason Latour’s Norm MacDonald homage from last year for you. Kept coming to mind when I wasn’t free to do it, and I’d forget! Until just now.

Does it go with this post or the next one, though?

hmm, I see I have repeated Latour’s mistake with the capital ‘d’

Great artwork! But I'd already heard that Kermit the frog joke so I didn't laugh (or groan).

Yeah, Latour is a brilliant cartoonist-illustrator (and concept person — co-creator of SpiderGwen, a real gift to Marvel as I expect you know well). He really knows what to do with a panel, a page, &c. Drawings so rewarding to look at. Wonderful stuff. Turns out also to have been one of these Warren Ellis sorts of creeps in the con scene and so on, sadly. His career’s suffered for it in the last few years.

I have to confess now that I’ve never found Macdonald appealing. Apart from the grin, that is. ‘If he would just shut up and grin at us’ is kind of how I’ve always reacted to him. Never have sought out stand-up much, but I seem to go for try-hard types — Eddie Izzard, as I think of him, for instance — for whatever reason.

Ellis's cancellation could not have happened at a worse time for those artists who were finally using him as their meal-ticket. I am not saying Ellis's victims shouldn't have squawked. But even they seem a bit ... confused (about everything except that Ellis was really creepy. But we already knew that. Hey, if you want "creepy" spend a little time at your local brain injury ward. Things get "really creepy" fast! Meanwhile decent guys like Latour twist.

Sorry, but comics and brain injury are two subjects near and dear to me for obvious reasons.

Norm Macdonald wasn't to everyone's tastes -- heck, half the time he wasn't even to my tastes! But I did enjoy him in My Name is Earl. And Norm Macdonald's Got A Show is worth watching. At least I think so.
