On Vacation

I'm about to step into our car and drive the girls and a friend to Manitoba. Barring the unforeseen (last time we tried this, we made an unplanned stop in Sarnia while Eastern North America figured out how to turn the lights back on), we should arrive in Winnipeg roughly the same time as my wife.

A good deal of my extended family resides there. I'll also be attending the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the better to stalk musical heroes Jason Ringenberg (cow-punk godfather, currently having fun as "Farmer Jason"), Daniel Lanois and EmmyLou Harris. I'll also be bringing my notorious book suitcase to stock up on unexpected finds in some of Wpg's finer used bookstores. I'll do what I can to update my sites, but for the next two weeks postings could be sporadic.

Cheers.

Should you perchance run into my colleague Eric Stutzman, surprise him by saying hallo from me. (I know, I know, there are more than 300 people in Winnipeg.)

Everyone's going on vacation. Don't know where you all find the time?

No matter. Enjoy.

AH! The fabled book suitcase; only Pandora's box holds more fame and surprise. I hereby dub your westward voyage, The Bookman Cometh. Waiting to read of tales of the Manitoba.

Wow! Some great performers.
1) Campbell Bros- One of the originators of Sacred Steel slide guitar. High energy, religion, dancing. What more can one ask?
2) Bill Frisell - If one could be a guitar genius, Mr. Frisell would be it.
3) Steve Forbert - Still cutting, still funny, still entertaining. A gentler version of Loudon W.
4) John Mooney - Witty blues guitar. White but not whiny.
5) Ricky Skaggs - A Bluegrass God.
6) Valdy - I can't believe this guy is even alive. It'd be worth it just to see him breath.
7) Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. Where was Family Welfare Services when this "family" came through town. It's a different world where they live and a short visit is necessary....and enough.

Have a great time at the festival. Might need another suitcase to fit in the cd's.

GS - I wandered Birdshill Park with my "Looking for Stutzman" shirt, and got nothing. The festival attracted just over 11,000 attendees a day, so it was easy to miss me (actually, I did wear my "Jason & The Scorchers" shirt on Sunday. Maybe your friend caught sight of me?).

FCB - "Find the time"? My entire life is a vacation!

DV - Campbell Brothers rock! Bill Frisell was cursed with bad weather, but put on a good show. Steve Forbert was having trouble on the Main Stage, but was dynamite in his smaller venue. And you pretty much nailed the other acts. Lots of fun, lots of mud (though I'm not one to associate mud with fun), very few mosquitoes.

It's week 2, which means I've a suitcase to be filled!
