And while you’re at it, here’s Phil on writin’ — a piece that has received, deservedly, a LOT of link-love. Oh, and buy his book! Phil’s a guy I first encountered during the halcyon days of Peak Blogging and I am yoojly chuffed to see his current work receiving excellent attention. Excelsior, dude!
Also:
- “Perhaps I was conditioned by that A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood trailer (did Hanks’ Mr. Rogers really have to sound so much like his Forrest Gump?)” — Juxtaposing Forrest Gump with Once Upon a Time ...in Hollywood, Kevin Dettmar delivers a review I wish I’d written.
- Jacques Levy was, without question, a critical element to the phenomena of Bob Dylan’s The Rolling Thunder Review. And yet the Netflix/Scorsese “mock-u-rock-u-mentary” completely ignores him. Son Julien Levy puzzles over this — the sixties and seventies were a scene, man; due diligence to the scenesters, please! — and fills in some of the gap.
Let me second that endorsement.
ReplyDeleteI disagreed with about half of what Phil wrote about the Bible, but I found it a fascinating and insightful essay nonetheless.
And that one on writing was really good. It got me thinking a lot.
I caught the piece on (not) teaching writing without much previous awareness of Christman, curiously. Was among its social sharers, as you might’ve noticed — as much because of personal friendliness with one or two of the Bruderhof folks (via past connection, originally) and generally sympathetic vibes between their publishing and S.H.’s organizational ambitions as because of what he had to say there. Did not remember, if I once knew, that he was among the serious religion-literate-anglosphere bloggers of yore. Hadn’t noticed the other Plough item you point to here, either, but certainly do intend to give it a look now.
ReplyDeleteYou repeat yourself, Joel, but I suppose that is only fair (since that's what I'm doing too).
ReplyDeletepdb - "peak blogging" was '06, by my reckoning. Thirteen years ago Phil was a much younger man, and the seriousness is something he has cultivated and brought to the fore fairly recently. It's a good look!
"Seriousness = it's a good look" -- not that I'll be trying it on anytime soon. Why start now?
ReplyDeleteHa, seriousness has always been my shtick, to very little apparent good effect. Confident there’s a case to be made for it, but somebody other than me should be making it, probably.
ReplyDelete>>>>You repeat yourself, Joel,
ReplyDelete...ah, caught me!
