Welcome To Grade 9, Track 4

“Hair Of The Dog,” Nazareth

Ah, but the Scots have all the righteous brawling songs.

True story: the younger daughter, while listening to this song, commented, “Girls don't get much of a break, do they, Dad?”

“How do you mean, sweetie?”

“Well, if you want to call someone something bad, it's usually goes back to a girl, even if it's a guy. Like, 'Son of a bitch' or 'bastard.'”

Sad but true. On the other side of that token, however, the surest way to wound a fella is to deride his so-called “manhood.” The emotional frailty that lurks behind that comical flap of skin couldn't possibly be overstated.

A lesson for a little later, perhaps.

  1. Ah...back to the days when the pants were so tight as to threaten one's manhood....Seems we (Menz) were well into mis-treating ourselves while (allegedly) preening for the fairer (and put upon) other sex.

  2. Spinal Tap to the rescue, again:

Marty: One thing that puzzles me is the make-up of your audience seems to be ... uh ... predominantly young boys.

David: Well it's a sexual thing, really, isn't it? Aside from all the identifying the boys do with us there's also a re-reaction to the female ....

Nigel: Really they're quite fearful, that's my theory. They see us on stage with tight trousers. We've got, you know, armadillos in our trousers. I mean it's really quite frightening....

  3. ...and now that we know armadillos (at least eating them) can cause leprosy, it's amazing that we've been able to re-produce or even be accepted into social circles......
