The Pissy Mystic

It seems to me someone out there has a song about a "pissy mystic," which pretty much sums up my attitude regarding the pop culture confections I've slowly stopped enjoying over the years. The various reincarnations of Star Trek are just one example. Lately the web has generously hosted the trailer for J.J. Abrams crack at franchise renewal. Gee willikers, Corky: loving slo-mo pan-shots of the U.S.S. Enterprise!! That oughtta inject a little life into the corpse .... no?

Judge for yourself here, but I say, no. Those loving, slo-mo pans have worn out their welcome with me, seeing as how they've become the substitute for the sort of genuine emotional interest that good writers, directors and actors invest in characters.

  1. A guy doing some Arc Welding? Isn't that so 20th Century? And it's an actual human being doing the work? Wouldn't there be robotic welders scooting around zapping jolts and melding the metal like plastic?

Oh, right, it gives it a human hand-made touch....
Seems like a waste of $300 gazillion dollars, it seems.

Why don't they spend it on a sequel to Buckaroo Banzai?

  2. BB II? Now that's a sequel I'd pay money to see. Actually, I'd even pay to see a Michael Bay remake of it -- that's just how low my standard for entertainment has become.

  3. WP,
If your entertainment stds have fallen that low, please check out Leningrad Cowboys: Total Balalaika Show. Not that you require low stds, it's just that if you do (temporarily) are in possession of said Stds of Nadir, your resultign joy on watching this movie will only be geometrically multiplied.
    Plus, the Extras are fabulous.

    Just suggestin'

  4. I've been meaning to comment on your Cowboys, who I was actually somewhat familiar with back in the day thanks to one of CBC's late-night "get your freak on" programs, Brave New Waves. I now have every intention of seeking out Total Balalika. Here's hoping it raises my spirits and my standards.

  5. Ahem.

I believe I left you with a Doctor Who disc containing "Human Nature," "The Family of Blood" and "Blink" -- they are three of the best hours of TV I saw last year (I'm not alone) and far, FAR better than anything Star Trek is liable to come up with anytime soon.

    I'm just saying. :)

Meanwhile, I'm working to get you caught up with BSG -- let's get those spirits up!

  8. I'm not denying Star Trek has abused its fans for the past few years, but I'll give this new film the benefit of the doubt and assume the reason there are no actors or characters is because its still in production...I agree that this kind of preview doesn't bode well though
