1977 is also the year I read my first Louis L'Amour novel: The Sackett Brand.
It's been 30 years since I read it, and I still recall the narrator announcing at the outset that he liked the feel of socks inside his boots — when he could afford 'em.
After that, I was just one more adolescent who'd been roped and hog-tied. Now fess up, pardner: what was yours?
Y'know, I've read a couple. I liked him but not enough to read a bunch. Though, when I worked in a book store in the midwest, his books were our third best sellers after S. King and Danielle Steel.
ReplyDeleteI read quite a few, but the first is the only novel I could name (well ... not true: there's also Hondo). I can also get in touch with that bitter moment some five years later when I realized I no longer enjoyed reading him, not even a little.
ReplyDeleteI should add to that last sentiment: there are rock & roll bands that qualify on that score, too.
ReplyDeleteActually I've never read any. I've been trying to brush up on my classic pulp fiction recently, maybe I should add this to my list
ReplyDeleteFunny, or just a shame maybe, that I can well recall somehow or other discovering, & eagerly going back for more, Louis L'Amour at the public library I frequented as a kid, but can't remember a thing about those stories. In any case, wish my experience compared more favorably with yours, WP self-consciously (if regretfully) graduating to something better. ('Maturity' in my little world was really to graduate out of reading for its own good as I was learning pretty well to do by mid high-school.)
